Synopsis:
At the port of Lysarr, Arion and his companions bid farewell to Wyynde's brother Nightfire. They then buy an air ship that takes them back to the City of the Golden Gate. When they arrive they find that an large arena has been built during their absence. Arion delivers a warning about the threat of Garn Daanuth, but D'Tilluh dismisses it. The king then orders that Arion, Chian, and Wyynde begin training warriors for the arena.
Arion and the other reluctantly abide by the wishes of the king. All three are against the pitting of man against man in the arena, but over the course of a few days Wyynde and Chian begin to change. Arion has finally had enough and demands an audience with the king. When he gets it, he is shocked to discover that the king has appointed Garn Daanuth to the position of high mage.
Arion turns to his friends for help only to find them disinterested. This leads to a fight with Wyynde, who challenges Arion to a duel in the arena. Arion is then forced to fight his friend who quickly takes the upper hand in the fight. The crowd including Chian and Mara want Wyynde to kill Arion.
