Synopsis:
After a funeral for the fallen knight Creston, Malagigi uses his magic to trace his killer. The spell reveals that the wizard's old foe Baledor is responsible. He then departs for Mount Saint Michael, a place of power where the enemy sorcerer resides. Valda delivers the news of Malagigi's departure to Carolus Magnus. She then follows Malagigi while her king and his knights ride to war against the Saxons.
After a long journey to Mount Saint Michael, Valda is attacked by monks. She kills one who thanks her for killing him. Then she falls to the superior numbers. The monks carry her to the castle fortress which is Baledor's stronghold.
