Synopsis:
Arak and Satyricus ride out of Byzantium beside the mysterious woman, Dyanna. When they reach the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, they part ways. Dyanna enters the forest and warns Arak not to follow. Instead the warrior enters a nearby village to barter for horses and supplies while Satyricus waits near the temple.
Arak successfully buys some horse and returns to the temple. However, Satyricus is gone having been lured away to frolic with a pair of female shepherds. Arak searches the woods and finds a circular grove of trees. When he enters a gray haired man attacks him. Arak is forced to kill the man.
Arak attempts to leave the grove to resume the search for Satyricus. However, his path is blocked by a magical barrier. Dyanna then appears with a group of Amazons at her back. She explains that Arak is now the guardian of a golden bough. He killed the previous guardian and now is bound to the grove.
