Synopsis:
On the planet Appellax, seven natives have stepped forward claiming credit for the death of the Kalar, the leader of their race. By law, the assassin becomes the next Kalar. To settle the dispute over who was the real killer, a trial by combat is arranged with Earth, which is considered a primitive world, as a battleground.
J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter, has been operating in secret on Earth for some time. He does not reveal his presence to the world, fearing the reaction of the people to his alien nature. When one of the Appellax aliens assumes the form of a giant stone creature and turns several people into statues, J'onn must risk revealing himself to stop the alien.
Elsewhere Aquaman has just returned from his first visit to Atlantis. Another of the Appellax aliens is present in the waters nearby. The alien briefly turns Aquaman into a puddle of liquid mercury. The Sea King is able to save himself by creating an underwater whirlpool.
In an unnamed city, the daughter of the original Black Canary has donned her mother's costume and set out to be an adventurer. She encounters an Appellaxian made of glass. Using her sonic scream, she is able to defeat the alien by shattering him.
Green Lantern returns to Earth after his first meeting with the Guardians and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. He follows a meteor to the ground from which one of the aliens emerges. This one takes the form of a yellow bird creature. Despite his own vulnerability to yellow, Green Lantern prevails.
The Flash learns of another alien landing in the town of Croydon. This one is a flame creature which the Flash defeats by removing the supply of oxygen from the area around the alien.
The five heroes all learn about the other meteors landing around the globe. They converge on a sixth alien which was taken the form of a tree creature. It gains the upper hand and turns each of the heroes into tree creatures bent to its will. Although under the control of the alien, the heroes are able to exert a bit of their own wills which when used in tandem, allows them to free each other and ultimately defeat the alien.
The final landing site is determined to be in Antarctica. The heroes join forces and fly there with the aid of Green Lantern's power ring. They arrive in time to see Superman finish off the alien invader. The Man of Steel flies away before meeting the group, who decide to join forces on a regular basis as the Justice League of America.
