Comments:

This story is continued in part from Swamp Thing #82.
Synopsis:
The Swamp Thing is transported further back in time and finds himself in the body of a dead French pilot during World War I. The pilot was shot down by Hans Von Hammer, the Enemy Ace. Being an honorable man, Von Hammer orders the reanimated Frenchman cared for, but Swamp Thing is unable to form the words to communicate.
While her husband Josip is away at war, Anais Arcane is staying with her cousin Hans. When she learns that her son Anton has been expelled from medical school, she finds him performing his hideous medical experiments on wounded soldiers. She brings him back to Von Hammer's castle to work on the strange Frenchman.
Anton Arcane experiments on Swamp Thing and performs occult rituals using artifacts and books found in the Von Hammer family museum. Eventually, Anais discovers his barbaric practices. Anton attempts to use his mother is a sacrificial blood letting, but the Enemy Ace shoots Arcane. Swamp Thing, who can now speak, asks Von Hammer to use the Claw of Aelkhund to send him on his journey. Hans complies with the request, then seals the artifacts behind a wall in his castle. Anton, who survived the gunshot, has escaped.
Back in present day Louisiana, Abby learns from the Phantom Stranger that the Swamp Thing is neither in Heaven nor Hell. She also is informed by Chester that her benefit checks regarding Matthew have stopped.
