Comments:
This is a Detached Service Diary story featuring Andre. The other Blackhawks appear only briefly.
A flashback to 1937 depicts Andre before the formation of the Blackhawks. The main portion of this story must take place in August, 1940 since it mentions that Charles De Gaulle was sentenced to death in absentia for speaking out against the Vichy regime in a radio broadcast on June 18, 1940. The sentence was handed down on August 2nd, placing this story as occurring shortly thereafter.
Synopsis:
In 1937, Andre meets a woman named Monique at a pastry shop. When they first meet, she hate him, but eventually they fall in love. Then the war separates them. After Andre has joined the Blackhawks and France has fallen to the Nazis, Andre is shot down and forces to seek refuge with the French resistance. He is reunited with Monique and helps her group escape a Nazi trap. She is angry when he refuses to stay and lead the resistance. He chooses to return to the Blackhawks.
Later on Blackhawk Island, Andre stares at a picture of Monique as he believes her to be the one that got away.
