Although, he would like to return to the service of D'Tilluh, Wyynde chooses to put aside his own desires and lead his people. However, his cousin Graywolff challenges Wyynde during the ceremony.
The following day Wyynde and Graywolff embark on a challenge to determine which will become the new dhonu. Graywolff drugs Wyynde and uses black magic from the shaman Wintermoon to gain an advantage. Arion helps his friend fight the sorcery. In the ensuing battle Graywolff is killed, and Wyynde assumes his rightful place as leader of his people.
