Comments:
This story occurs one year in the past. It reveals the first meeting between Jason Todd and Dick Grayson. This differs from pre-Crisis continuity in that Dick is already Nightwing when he meets Jason for the first time.
This story establishes that Dick was 19 when he split with Bruce. He had been Robin for six years. Therefore he first became Robin at around age 13.
Synopsis:
Robin spies on a drug den, but a guard spots him. He is rescued by Nightwing who had also been observing the drug dealers. Dick tells Jason that he will be visiting the Batcave the following day. Jason is surprised that Nightwing knows Batman's secret identity. When Jason returns home, Bruce explains that Nightwing was once the first Robin.
The following day, Nightwing pays Bruce a visit. The two argue. Dick is upset that Bruce cast him out after he was wounded by the Joker. He is also upset that Bruce has taken on a new partner to replace him. Batman gives excuses, but Dick does not accept them. Finally, Bruce admits that he missed Dick and had been lonely. He then throws him out of the Batcave.
That night Nightwing stakes out the drug dealers again. Robin arrives. Dick gives Jason his old Robin costume, explaining that Jason will some day grow into it. They then take down the drug dealers while Batman proudly watches.
