Comments:
The Iron Major appears to die in this story, but his subsequent appearances indicate that he survived and was merely wounded.
This story reveals that Rock underwent training as a paratrooper prior to joining the infantry.
Synopsis:
Easy Company is attacked while holding position during a snow storm. Rock is the only man not wounded, so he holds position while sending the others back to base for reinforcements. The cold freezes Sgt. Rock, until he is found by a unit of Germans led by the Iron Major. Rock is taken prisoner and escorted back to Stalag 9.
The Iron Major, a German who has lost his hand and replaced it with an iron fist, taunts Rock in his cell high above a river. The German officer reveals that Easy will be walking into a trap soon. Rock jumps from the window and uses his paratrooper training to glide down into the water below.
The Iron Major expected the escape attempt and follows Rock into the Forest of Forgotten Skulls. When he catches Rock, his iron fist proves to be a powerful weapon. He intends to drag Rock back to the prison by his heels. Rock struggles and eventually escapes when the Iron Major hits a buried land mine. Rock then returns to Easy Company and warns them about the intended ambush.
