History:
Though he was only one of millions of G.I.s who joined the service in the opening days of World War II, Sergeant Frank Rock epitomized the American fighting man and spirit.
Rock was the son of John Michael Rock, a fallen World War I hero, and was raised, along with his brothers Larry, Mickey, and Eddie, and a younger sister, by a stepfather who was a Pennsylvania miner. Frank was a poor student throughout his scholastic career, though he proved himself a very capable athlete. Rock was forced to quit school after his stepfather died in a mining accident and he was left with the responsibility of raising his younger siblings. In order to support his struggling family, he took to the professional boxing arena. Rock was far from skilled in his chosen profession, but he was tough and earned a reputation for being impossible to knock down in a fight.
Rock had left boxing and was employed in a steel mill when America entered the Second World War. Rock enlisted the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the newly formed Easy Company as a buck private. Easy’s first assignment was under General George Patton in North Africa, where Rock saw combat against the Nazi tank commander Irwin Rommel.
Some time later, at the battle to take Three Stripes Hill, Rock earned a battlefield promotion to sergeant for his bravery under fire to replace Easy’s topkick, who had died in action. Over the years Rock would be offered further promotions to commissioned ranks, but he would always refuse them, preferring to stay on the battlefield with, and as a part of, Easy Co. The squad had gained some fame among their comrades in the ETO as "The Combat Happy Joes of Easy" because of their habit of always finding their way into the thick of the action.
Rock and Easy saw almost continuous action throughout the war, fighting their way through France, Germany, Italy, North Africa, Belgium, Holland, and parts of the Pacific. Easy hosted many regulars and a constant stream of replacements for those killed in action.
Rock’s battles against the Nazi’s were usually approached by him as the cold, impersonal work of a professional soldier. Though not lacking in compassion, and even recognizing that the German or Italian or Japanese soldier facing him across the line was simply a soldier doing his job for his country as Rock did for his, Rock had few personal battles, except those with such Nazi super-soldiers as the Iron Major, or Wolf, the Nazi Ghost.
The ultimate fates of Rock and Easy Co. have become more military legend than fact, and until someone delves into the dusty archives of the Pentagon to retrieve those facts, Rock and Easy will remain legends. But whatever their fate, no one will deny they were among the bravest heroes of World War II.
Powers:
Frank Rock possessed no superhuman powers but was an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant. He was also a skilled marksman and was well versed in the weapons of his day. Overall, his ability to lead and his determination made him appear larger than life.
