Synopsis:
Following the destruction of the Khe-Wannantu, Wyynde and his brother Nightfire are the only survivors. Nightfire wanders away from Wyynde and his friends and finds himself in the path of a stampede. Arion uses the illusion of fire to protect the boy and save his life.
Meanwhile the waters that have engulfed the land of the Khe-Wannantu, Garn Daanuth struggles against the chains of Deedra which bind him. He summons a dark god Thalus to aid him. Deedra herself appears to prevent Garn's release, but she is defeated by Thalus. Deedra sends her power to Arion, who comes to her aid.
With Deedra out of action, Garn is able to free himself from the chains. He and Arion engage in battle again, but Thalas has enchanted Arion to prevent him from leaving the water. During a break in the battle, Arion passes Deedra's power back to the goddess. Refreshed, she is able to paralyze Garn by transforming him into gold before disappearing with Thalus.
Arion remains underwater without magical protection. He nearly drowns, but Fawndancer rescues him. She has also survived the destruction of her people, but Garn's magic has transformed her into a mermaid.
