Comments:
Dr. Mid-Nite’s experience with the owl crashing through his window at night is eerily similar to the famous scene that inspired Batman when a bat crashed through Bruce Wayne’s window. McNider though, keeps the owl for a pet, naming it Hooty.

This story originally was not titled; the title shown here was given on the contents page of JSA All Star Archives Vol. 1 in which this story is reprinted.

Synopsis:
Famous surgeon, Dr. Charles McNider is asked to help with an injured witness scheduled to testify against racket boss Killer Maroni. Maroni’s henchman throws a bomb into the room, leaving only McNider alive. As a side effect from the blast, the doctor is left permanently blind.

McNider begins a career as a detective writer, but when an owl crashes through his window one evening, the doctor realizes he has perfect night vision. When he learns Maroni is up to his old tricks again, McNider develops a costume, special infra-red goggles allowing him to see by day, and blackout bombs to blind opponents. He then saves another witness by performing surgery in the dark and finally capturing Maroni as Dr. Mid-Nite.
