Comments:
John Jones appears to be killed publicly in this story. As a result, J'onn abandons his human identity. He resumes it again beginning in Justice League of America #246.

Martian Manhunter's series continues in the third story of House of Mystery #143, following this story.

Synopsis:
A Babylonian idol called Diabolu is stolen from the home of John R. Collins by Vince Durskin. Durksin opens the Idol-Head and is struck by a flash of power. The power causes destructive beams to eminate from his eyes.

Later a glowing form emerges from the Idol-Head. The creature quickly becomes a menace, attracting the attention of J'onn J'onzz. While trying to protect a boy from being devoured by the creature, detective John Jones appears to be destroyed by it. He avoids destruction by becoming immaterial and escaping underground.

J'onn discovers the link between Durskin and the glowing creature. He captures Durskin, who has used his eye-beams to rob an armored car. Then he turns Durskin's eye-beams on the creature. The creature is destroyed, and Durskin loses his power.

The Idol-Head is not recovered and remains a threat. J'onn decides not to resume his John Jones identity. Instead he dedicates himself to battling the evil contained within the Idol-Head of Diabolu.
