The Doll's House Part 2
One week passes between Sandman #10 and this story which continues in Sandman #12.
Gilbert is revealed to be Fiddler's Green in Sandman #16. His human form, Gilbert, is based on G.K. Chesterton, a English writer and poet. Hal makes a reference to Gilbert requesting a pencil to write on the ceiling. This detail is a callback to Chesterton's essay "On Lying in Bed".
Synopsis:
Rose Walker moves into a boarding house in Florida where she begins a search for Jed, her 12-year old brother. Her housemates include: Hal Carter, the cross-dressing landlord; Ken and Barbie, yuppies; Chantal and Zelda, spider collectors; and Gilbert, a rotund Englishman. The search for Jed turns up several clues including the deaths of their father and grandfather. Eventually a private investigator finds that Jed is living on a farm. Rose and Gilbert embark on a road trip to find him.
Meanwhile, Dream keeps tabs on Rose, who is a vortex, using Matthew the Raven as a spy. Dream hopes that Rose will ensnare the rogue dreams: Fiddler's Green, Brute and Glob, and the Corinthian. Dream locates Jed, who has been locked in a basement and escapes to a world of dreams. Brute and Glob have isolated the boy's dreams from the main dream world. This angers Dream, who dons his helmet and prepares to seek retribution on the rogue dreams.
