Comments:
This story is a post-Crisis adaptation of the second story of All-American Comics #19 and the third story of All-American Comics #20.
Synopsis:
College sophomore Al Pratt is bullied because of his short stature. When he meets destitute former boxer Joe Morgan, Al helps him with food and shelter. In return Joe begins training Al to the peak of physical fitness. After a year, Al is strong and muscular.
Al seeks to win the heart of Mary James. When she is kidnapped, he rescues her, but instead of revealing himself as her savior, Al leaves a calling card with the name the Atom. At a formal dance, Al goes into action again when crooks try to steal Mary's necklace. This time he wears a mask. The Atom then becomes the latest costumed mystery man and eventually becomes a founding member of the JSA.
