Comments:
This is one of four possible origins presented for the Phantom Stranger. Since the stories are all substantially different, it is unclear which, if any, of them are canonical.
Synopsis:
At a time when the universe is nearing the end, two scientists search for a way to prolong the existence of the universe by siphoning energy from the Big Bang at the beginning of time. As the scientists look back in time they begin to see swirls forming a giant hand. Just then the Phantom Stranger appears and shuts off the machine. He warns that their actions would cause disastrous effects for the universe as similar experiments have done before.
Dr. Alt, one of the scientists, is able to knock out the Stranger. The Phantom Stranger knows that Alt is an avatar of Anti-Life whose intent is to stop the universe from being created at the beginning of time. His partner learns the truth and is given power by the Stranger. He then jumps through an open portal which leads to the beginning of time. There, the scientist is exposed to the incredible energy of the Big Bang and the new universe only nanoseconds after creation. He becomes the Phantom Stranger and realizes that the man he met at the end of time was himself after living through the entire timespan of the universe's existence.
