Synopsis:
While reading the obituaries, Cain hears screams coming from the room of Dr. Peterson. Wallace Peterson is a polar explorer. He murdered his boss in order to lead an expedition to Antarctica where he believed he would find a lost city. Soon after the expedition arrived, Peterson got lost and fell into a deep cavern. There he met a race of subterranean men who led him to the lost city.
Peterson was amazed by the city and its people. They were also intrigued by the doctor for it had been a long time since they had contact with the surface. Peterson answered their questions, but he was not allowed to leave. Years passed until he convinced one of his guards to lead him to the surface. Once there, the guard died from exposure to the outside world.
Peterson was found by other explorers. Doctors examined him and discovered a change to his body chemistry. His natural body temperature was now abnormally low. Peterson was released, and he came to reside at the House of Mystery. When Cain reaches the doctor's room to investigate the screams, the noise has stopped. Peterson has melted and turned into a puddle of water, much like his guard did upon reaching the surface.
