Comments:
Batman is mistakenly depicted wearing Superman-style boots on the cover.
Pied Piper, the Mask, Killer Moth, Dagon, and Dr. Polaris appear only behind-the-scenes in this story, as duplicates created by Abnegazar, Rath, and Ghast take their places. The real villains remain in prison.
This is the first Earth-1 appearance of both the Mask and Killer Moth. The Earth-2 Mask was last seen in the third story of Wonder Woman #24. The Earth-2 Killer Moth was last seen in the first story of Detective Comics #173.
Synopsis:
Failing in their plan to animate the uniforms of five Justice League members to free them from their prison-crypts, the demons Abnegazar, Rath, and Ghast create duplicates of five super-villains, and send them against the heroes. By the time Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Flash have overcome Killer Moth, Dagon, the Mask, Dr. Polaris, and the Pied Piper, their costumes are in shreds, and they are forced to don the uniforms imbued with the demons' magic as replacements.
A second battle with the super-villain duplicates ensues, in which the villains vanish, and the heroes find themselves fighting empty costumes. Exhausted by this second ordeal, the Justice League champions are now too weak to resist the magic which forces them to free the demon trio.
The JLA had foreseen this eventually, however, and soon after the demons' release, the mystic Red Jar, Green Bell, and Silver Wheel, commanded by Green Lantern's power ring, automatically return them to their crypt.
