Comments:
The Elemental War Act One
Although the editor's note indicates that this story takes place after Swamp Thing #92, the schedule for Swamp Thing was upset due to the departure of Rick Veitch from that title. Therefore, this story takes place after Swamp Thing #90 in which Swamp Thing returns to the present after an extended trip into the past.
This story continues in Firestorm the Nuclear Man #91.
Synopsis:
Firestorm struggles with his own dual nature. His elemental side wants to cleanse the Earth with fire. However, his human nature causes him to seek out the families from his old lives. Unable to determine the appropriate course of action, Firestorm happens across a forest fire started by a lightning strike. Using his powers, Firestorm absorbs the entire fire, extinguishing it. The firefighters celebrate and express their gratitude.
The incident inspires Firestorm to help mankind. He then learns of an oil fire at an offshore drilling site. The fire was caused when the oil workers killed protester, Mai Miyazaki. However, her death in fire and water caused her to be reborn as the water elemental Naiad. Firestorm's arrival puts the two elemental forces into direct conflict.
