Comments:
This story establishes that Don Caballero's adventures take place in the early 19th century while California was still a colony of Spain. Spain lost control of California following the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, so this story must occur before that time.

Synopsis:
The trader Francisco Diaz and his partners loot the gold from the local Saguard indian tribe. In order to transport the stolen gold across the desert to their awaiting ship, the crooks enlist the aid of Don Caballero as a guide. To gain his service Diaz tells Caballero that he is really guiding his niece Dolores to the ship and that the chests they carry are her wardrobe.

Along the journey, the indians attack Caballero and the caravan. The master swordsman defends himself and Dolores and pushes back the indian charge. When Dolores later mentions that she can't open the trunks they carry, Don Caballero becomes suspicious. To prove his theory, Caballero looses the ropes on one of the chests, causing it to fall. When it breaks open, the stolen gold is revealed.

Once Caballero learns the truth, he refuses to guide Diaz to his ship. Diaz threatens him and forces the swordsman to complete the journey. With the help of a mule Caballero is able to free himself once they reach the ship. He then engages the crooks in a sword fight. He wins and returns the stolen loot to the indians who have been following the trail of the thieves.
