A highwayman known as El Fuego was defeated by Don Caballero and fell to his apparent death. Some time later, villagers report seeing the ghost of El Fuego who claims to have returned in order to finish his goal of stealing money. Don Caballero encourages the villagers to resist the ghost. When one of them is killed by El Fuego and another rancher is threatened, the villagers capitulate and begin collecting money.

Don Caballero does not believe in the ghost and issues a challenge. That night El Fuego and several other men fight the swordsman and push him to his apparent death. Feeling secure in their victory the villains return to their hacienda and unmask. Caballero, still alive, has followed them and exposes the ghost as Ricardo Ugalda, a rancher who wanted to use the legend to steal from the villagers. Caballero defeats him and thwarts the villain's plans to acquire riches.
