Synopsis:
While driving Carol Ferris to a dinner date, Hal Jordan has a newspaper fly up and cover his eyes. Fortunately, Hal is able to avoid an accident. When he arrives at dinner, Hal recalls other incidents, such as tripping into the path of a jet flame and falling down a flight of stairs, that day which may indicate that he is jinxed. As he thinks about the problem, Hal believes Sinestro may be behind it. He returns Carol to her home, claiming he has work at the office to finish; then he flys off as Green Lanterm. When Green Lantern arrives on the planet where he left Sinestro, he discovers Sinestro has indeed escaped and is probably in the universe of Qward.
In the anti-matter universe of Qward, Sinestro is participating in a popularity contest for the most evil citizen. He currently trails Gypo-Bax, but he has a plan to defeat Green Lantern and win the contest. He flys off to intercept Green Lantern, who is on his way to Qward. Sinestro lures GL to Gryx, a yellow world, where GL’s power ring is useless. Sinestro then explains to the helpless Green Lantern that he escaped his prison because the mind control device that kept him paralyzed was not designed to work on Sinestro. He then leaves the emerald gladiator imprisoned on the yellow planet.
While exploring the yellow world, Green Lantern comes across a race of humanoids. They begin attacking him, believing he is an invader. Green Lantern runs from his attackers but is unable to avoid them all.
Back on Qward, Sinestro has taken the lead in the popularity contest. He plans to show the demise of Green Lantern to ensure his vicotry. As the Weaponers look on, Gypo-Bax, Sinestro’s rival, plots to outdo Sinestro.
On Gryx, Green Lantern’s retreat from the inhabitants has been cut off. Suddenly, a purple beam appears in the sky. Since the beam is not yellow, Green Lantern is able to use his ring within it. He escapes the planet and follows the purple beam back to Qward.
Green Lantern then crashes in on Sinestro and the Weaponers. During the duel with Sinestro, a beam from Sinestro’s ring hits Green Lantern in the forehead, but it does not seem to have an effect. Green Lantern defeats his foe and returns him to his original prison. He fixes the mind control device to work on Sinestro, preventing his further escape. When he returns home, he makes up with Carol for his earlier departure.
