Pieface learns the secret identity of Green Lantern in this story.
Synopsis:
In the offices of the Ferris Aircraft Company, Hal Jordan learns that his mechanic Thomas "Pieface" Kalmaku has quit his job. Wanting to retain this valuable employee, Hal sets out to talk Pieface out of leaving. He locates Pieface near the hangar, where two thugs are roughing up the eskimo. Hal steps in and punches one of the goons, who immediately take off running. Pieface explains that it was a misunderstanding, and he goes on to explain why he has decided to quit.
He relates to Hal the story of how his father, Kal, and a white trapper named Jimmy Dawes discovered a gold mine in Alaska. They made a map of it’s location and divided it into two pieces. While Dawes went off in search of funding for the excavation, Kal returned to his village. Pieface was given his father’s portion of the map when Kal passed away. Dawes did not return, so Pieface set out in search of him.
Pieface now realizes that his portion of the map was stolen by the two goons who attacked him. Unable to pursue them Hal leaves, but returns shortly as Green Lantern. As Green Lantern, he tells Pieface that Hal asked for his help. Using the power ring, GL probes Pieface’s mind and they produce another copy of the stolen map.
Green Lantern and Pieface fly to Alaska and follow Pieface’s portion of the map. They stop momentarily at a frozen-over mining camp. Outside they witness a plane landing on the ice fields. Three men exit the plane, and GL recognizes two of them as the thieves who stole Pieface’s map. GL battles them but his ring runs out of power, it’s 24 hour limit having been reached. Both he and Pieface are captured by the trio. Green Lantern is frozen into a block of ice and left behind. He is able to free himself with the last remaining bits of power from the ring.
Green Lantern then pursues the villains to their lair. He fakes them out by pretending the ring still works, and uses his fists to defeat them. With the mine relocated, and Pieface’s people left in charge, Pieface agrees to return to his job as a mechanic.
Back at the hangar, Pieface reveals to Hal Jordan that he has figured out that Hal is secretly Green Lantern. The punch GL threw was the same as Hal had thrown earlier. He offers to let Hal use the ring to erase the knowledge from his mind, but Hal decides that Pieface shall be his confidant.
