Comments:
This story is said to take place in 1878. Given events later in the Jonah Hex timeline, including his trip to the future in 1875, this story most likely takes place several years earlier.
Synopsis:
Jonah Hex rescues Frank Joad from a burning cabin. Joad wants Hex to train him to become a gunfighter so he can seek out Wade Ransome, the man who killed his parents. Jonah refuses the request and leaves to pursue the Bart Jethro Gang.
When Jonah is captured by the gang and nearly killed, Frank saves Jonah's life. Hex then agrees to train Joad. Once the training is complete, the two men apprehend the Jethro Gang. However, Joad shows off and forces a fight which results in the deaths of the gang members.
When Jonah delivers the corpses to the sheriff for his bounty, he meets Wade Ransome and learns the real story. Joad is a bank robber responsible for the death of Ransome's parents. Ransome then walks into an ambush and is killed. Hex is forced into a duel with Joad. Both men get off a shot. Joad is the faster draw, but Jonah's aim is true. Despite receiving a wound to his shoulder, Hex succeeds in killing Joad.
