Comments:
This story is said to take place in Virginia in 1875. Given other events later in the Jonah Hex timeline including his trip to the future in 1875. This story most likely takes place several years earlier.
Turnbull appears to die in this story. However, he returns in later Jonah Hex stories proving that he must have recovered from the pitchfork incident.
Synopsis:
Jonah Hex returns to Virginia to clear his name of treason. When he stops at a tavern, the patrons recognize him and walk out. Word of Jonah's return reaches Mr. Turnbull, the father of Hex's best friend Jeb who was killed at Fort Charlotte. Turnbull arranges for Jonah's capture.
Turnbull then stages a trial where he presides as judge. Former Confederate soldiers testify against Hex and find him guilty. As punishment, buttons are stripped from Hex's uniform, a yellow streak is painted on his back, and he will ultimately face a firing squad the next day.
That night, Jonah is bound and held captive in a barn. He tries to escape. Turnbull's servant, Solomon stops him. Jonah confides his side of the story to Solomon. The black man believes Jonah's story, but Turnbull will not listen. A confrontation between the two men results in Turnbull accidentally being impaled on a pitchfork. Jonah then rides out of town.
