Synopsis:
Arak and Valda continue their quest to find Malagigi. They travel to Neapel where Hadrian has directed them to seek Gallio who can take them to Byzantium. They are informed by Gallio's former partner Montagu that the man they seek has been killed by Saracen pirates. Montagu, a slave ship captain, offers to take them to sea.
Although Arak and Valda dislike the slavers, they join the crew in a fight against the Saracens. Arak is wounded during the fight. When Valda tries to patch his arm, she discovers the severed hand of Gallio. Montagu admits that he killed his partner. Arak and Valda are then imprisoned in the ship's hold.
In the hold, Arak finds giant stone blocks being transported from Pompeii. He breaks one open and releases an undead survivor from Pompeii. Using Arak's blood, the conjurer named Nessim releases the rest of his people. They then fight Montagu and his men, sinking the ship in the process. Arak and Valda are the only survivors, though they are cast adrift on the open sea.
