Comments:

This story takes place on October 6, 1939.

Synopsis:
Amateur archaeologist Carter Hall having recently invented a new anti-gravity substance called "ninth metal" receives a crystal dagger from a colleague in Egypt. The dagger triggers dreams in Carter of his past life as the Egyptian Prince Khufu.

In Carter's dream, he is hunted by the foreign Hyksos leader Hath-Set who is intent on conquering Thebes. Carter and his princess, Shiera, lead a band of rebels that oppose Hath-Set. Eventually Khufu is defeated and killed with the crystal dagger, but not before he promises to return in another life.

Carter awakens and soon meets Shiera Sanders, a woman who has shared his dreams of a previous life. Carter then feels compelled to track down the source of an electrical surge that has killed many people in the local subway. Donning a hawk mask, wings, and a belt of ninth metal, Carter becomes Hawkman.

Hawkman soon finds Anton Hastor, a scientist responsible for the subway accident and not coincidentally the reincarnation of Khufu's enemy Hath-Set. Hastor escapes their first meeting, then he kidnaps Shiera. Hawkman comes to her rescue and delivers a nearly fatal crossbow bolt to Hastor's chest. Hawkman and Shiera escape with their lives, believing that Hastor is dead, but the scientist has survived and will return to battle Hawkman again.
