Part 2: "The Testing of Brainiac 5"
This story continues in Adventure Comics #345.
Synopsis:
When the Legionnaires learn that Brainiac 5 is being held as a prisoner of war on a wild asteroid, they fly there to free him. As they arrive, their ship is blasted by bolts of force and crashes. The Legionnaires survive, but are overpowered by android guards and taken captive.
In the prison camp, the male Legionnaires are reunited with Brainiac 5, and meet other captive heroes including Plant Lad, Shadow Kid, Blockade Boy, and Weight Wizard. Their jailer is Nardo, a three-eyed alien with the power to project force rays, who has sworn eternal warfare on lawmen everywhere. His android assistants keep the captives in line, as they are forced to break rocks in the yard outside. One hero, a Durlan who was frozen into Superboy's shape by Nardo, attempts to flee and is killed.
Later, Brainiac 5 is taken before Nardo and informed that the alien knows of the escape plans the heroes are forming. Brainiac 5 survives the brainwashing Nardo puts him through, and returns to the barracks to announce that one of the prisoners is cooperating with Nardo as an informer. Plant Lad soon cracks under the strain, and is killed after rebelling, and Chameleon Boy, who tries to learn the fate of the girl Legionnaires, is severly punished.
Finally, Matter-Eater Lad and Blockade Boy break camp and run for their lives, and find Nardo's second prison camp, populated by female inmates including the girl Legionnaires. Nardo and his androids suddenly arrive, however, and the villain fires his force ray at the escapees.
