Part 2: "The Castaway Legionnaire"
Synopsis:
As Sun Boy and Cosmic Boy return from a mission, they receive word from natives of the planet Xenn that their world is about to explode, and that they must be moved to another planet which has the rare element, xenon, in its atmosphere. Although Sun Boy has been on a series of cases without a break, he agrees to lead this mission, and oversees the outfitting of a great space ark, filled with provisions and manned by a robot crew. The Xennians are taken aboard and depart for a new world across space, just as their planet explodes.
As the journey progresses, Sun Boy becomes tyrannical towards the Legionnaires assisting him, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Light Lass, Star Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, and Triplicate Girl, and when he puts Cosmic Boy in chains, they decide to rise against him in mutiny. Assisted by the robots, he thwarts them, and casts the Legionnaires adrift in a small space-boat as punishment.
Trying to survive until they reach a civilized planet, Toonar, the castaway Legionnaires hitchhike by various means from world to world until they achieve their goal. Then they borrow a space-cruiser, and search for Sun Boy's ark, finally finding it caught in a giant vortex. After rescuing the Xennians and settling them on their new xenon-bearing world, they take Sun Boy, whose mind has now blanked out completely, to a medical foundation on Earth for treatment. There they learn that he had been a victim of space-fatigue from his many missions without rest.
After he is cured, the Legion adds a clause to their Constitution prohibiting members from undertaking more than five successive missions.
