Synopsis:
While traveling across the country, Green Lantern and Green Arrow pass through the mining town of Desolation. Several miners shoot at their truck, prompting them to investigate. The miners thought that the travelers were working for Slapper Soames, a tyrant mine owner who runs the town. Slapper is planning to hang young Johnny Walden, and the miners plan to revolt behind their leader Jacob.

When Green Arrow sees the fortifications at Slapper's disposal, he advises them to call off their attack. Jacob refuses to listen and charges into battle. Green Lantern and Green Arrow both pitch in to help. During the fight, the Guardian accompanying them tells GL that his power ring will no longer protect him from mortal harm because he has taken a leave of absence from his normal duties. As a result he is injured, while Green Arrow is taken prisoner.

Green Arrow is taken to Slapper's office where he learns that the leader of the revolt Jacob was really working with Soames. He wanted to start a futile revolt and crush it, so that the miners would never rise up again. Green Lantern, who has recovered from his injuries, is able to arrive in time to save his friend. GL also admits that his recent confusion over right and wrong has weaken his will power and thus, the power of his ring.
