Comments:
Perry White, the future editor of the Daily Planet, appears as a 21-year old reporter in this story. As revealed in the first story of World's Finest Comics #80, Perry served as an intern for Gotham Gazette, likely while in college prior to this story. His first scoop was published in the Chicago Journal as shown in the second story of Superman #142.
Synopsis:
Clark Kent and a young Perry White both apply for jobs at the Daily Planet on the same day. Clark is hired as a newsboy, but Perry is turned down for a job as a reporter. Perry can earn the job if he brings in a story about the latest criminal in Metropolis, the Ringmaster.
Clark and Perry witness the Ringmaster and his gang pull a heist. Perry misses out on the story, but Clark offers to help. Perry then sells newspapers in order to locate the Ringmaster. When he is captured, he offers to write a story for the crooks. The Ringmaster agrees, but then tries to kill Perry. Clark has been watching the action and rescues Perry as Superboy.
Perry delivers his story to the Planet, but the editor thinks it is fake. Superboy arrives with the crooks in custody as validation of the story. Perry is hired as a reporter and tells Clark to come back for a job when he grows up.
