Comments:
This story continues in part in Legends of the Dark Knight #2.
Pages 1-13 of this story take place just prior to the events depicted in Batman #404. Pages 14-17 recap the events of that story including, Bruce Wayne's return to Gotham after years training abroad, his first attempt at being a vigilante, and his encounter with the bat. The remainder of this story takes place immediately following Bruce becoming Batman.
Synopsis:
Bruce Wayne hires bounty hunter and expert tracker Willy Doggett to train with him during the pursuit of killer Thomas Woodley near the Arctic Circle. Doggett is shot while following Woodley up a snow covered mountain. Bruce knows he is the next target. He is able to trick the killer. The two men fight. Woodley slips and falls to his death, but Bruce is left alone on the mountain with no supplies.
Bruce continues his climb hoping to find shelter before freezing to death. He is found near-death by an Inuit tribe. The tribe shaman, who wears a bat-shaped mask, performs a ritual which includes a story about a bat who helps a raven recover from illness. After Bruce is healed, he returns to Gotham City after many travels abroad.
Shortly after his return, Bruce has his first excursion as a vigilante, which does not go well. He makes it home where he witnesses a bat crash through his window. The bat, along with a passage from a book concerning superstitious criminals, inspires Bruce to become Batman.
During his first outing, he aids Leslie Tompkins, whose clinic is being robbed. He saves Leslie and a pregnant woman. However, when the fight is over, the pregnant woman kills herself while screaming the name Chubala.
