History:
Professor Andrew Zagarian created "plastalloy", a synthetic substance that closely resembled human tissue, and which he hoped could be used to create artificial body parts. As an experiment, Zagarian created a huge artifical ape-like being from this plastalloy in an island laboratory and hooked it up to a generator. But Zagarian made the wrong power connection, and too much electricity surged into the creature's body, causing it to come to life. The creature, called the Shaggy Man, attacked whatever moved. Three members of the Justice League of America tried to stop the Shaggy Man but failed, because the creature could rapidly regenerate any body part it lost, and quickly learned how to cope with various forms of attack.
While those Justice Leaguers tried to defeat the Shaggy Man, three other JLA members unsuccessfully tried to stop a sentient creature that was once a tiny asteroid that had orbited Earth like a moon before finally falling to Earth's surface. Now this creature was in northern Chile, threatening Earth's future by draining important geological resources from the planet.
To solve the problems posed by these two creatures, the Flash had Zagarian construct a second Shaggy Man. The Justice Leaguers then trapped the two Shaggy Men and the moon creature in a deep pit that they covered up. The JLAers believed that the two Shaggy Men would demolish the moon creature and then battle each other for eternity.
The plan would have worked had not Hector Hammond used his psionic powers to release one of the Shaggy Men, and teleported it to the JLA satellite to battle the JLA and, Hammond hoped, destroy his archfoe Green Lantern. Instead, Green Lantern used his ring to reduce the Shaggy Man to tiny size and imprison it in a capsule the JLA kept on the satellite.
The other Shaggy Man wreaked havoc in the Soviet Union until the Batman tricked it into climbing aboard a missile that rocketed into space.
During the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths, Speedy blew up one of the Shaggy Men with an explosive arrow. However, the Shaggy Man could easily regenerate any of its destroyed body parts. The present whereabouts of the two Shaggy Men remain unknown.
Powers:
The Shaggy Men each have great super-human strength, and can apparently survive without food, water, or oxygen. They can regenerate any damaged or lost body part, even a head. After once experiencing a certain kind of attack, either Shaggy Man can learn how to resist it in the future.
