History:
At some point in Earth's future, there is a great metropolis ruled by an elite who force the rest of the adult population to work like slaves operating the machinery that enables the city to function.
However, a rebellion of the workers was being organized, led by a woman named Maria. The scientist Rotwang created a robot resembling a human woman, and then disguised her so that she looked exactly like Maria. Rotwang then substituted this false Maria for the real one, hoping thereby to sabotage the rebellion.
But Rotwang's plan failed. The robot was destroyed, the real Maria was freed, and the rebellion succeeded.
Rotwang was believed dead, but he actually had gone into hiding. He decided to attempt to change history so that the rebellion would never succeed. He rebuilt the robot and sent it to the year 1942 in order to alter history so that Maria would never exist.
The robot was somewhat damaged upon its arrival in 1942, but made its way to the headquarters of the All-Star Squadron. There the robot attacked the second Firebrand, thereby provoking a battle between it and other Squadron members. Identifying with the humanoid robot, the original Robotman came to its defense and took it to his laboratory. There he and his assistant Chuck Grayson repaired and even partially redesigned the robot, whom Robotman named Mekanique.
Mekanique claimed to be from Earth's future, and to have been sent back in time to alter history to prevent a devastating war from occurring. Mekanique stated that an automobile accident was about to occur that would set in motion the chain of events leading to the war. Firebrand and the Golden Age Green Lantern prevented the accident, thereby saving the lives of the military strategist Admiral Higby and a little girl named Annie.
However, by preventing the accident, the two heroes unknowingly apparently prevented Maria's birth somehow, thereby accomplishing Mekanique's true mission.
Mekanique's further activities int he 1940s are as yet unrecorded. Recently, Mekanique was reactivated by Commander Steel, who had come to believe that his grandson Steel and Steel's colleagues then active in the Justice League of America were criminals. Mekanique became Commander Steel's ally, and the Commander persuaded members of Infinity, Inc. to attack the JLA. The Commander and Mekanique later turned against the Infinitors, but Steel defeated his grandfather in battle, and Mekanique vanished.
Mekanique's current whereabout and activities are unknown. Nor is it known whether Mekanique has truly succeeded in preventing the rebellion's victory in "here" native time period.
Powers:
Mekanique is constructed of metals unknown in Earth's present time. Mekanique can fire electrical blasts and project a powerful "neutron shield". Mekanique can transport "herself" and others through dimensions and shield "herself" and others from detection by sensors.
