History:
Millionaire Ted Knight was an amateur astronomer who designed an advanced model telescope and discovered an unknown form of cosmic radiation. In spite of these accomplishments, Knight seemed unwilling to give his life purpose and direction, much to the distress of his girlfriend Doris Lee and his cousin and confidante Sandra Knight. Ted decided to change his idle ways.
In the spring of 1941 Ted visited his cousin Sandra, who showed him a "gravity rod" invented by Prof. Abraham Davis, who had not discovered a way to power it. Ted used the unknown cosmic radiation he had discovered to power the rod, which enabled its user to defy gravity, and learned it could also be used as a weapon.
Sandra told Ted about her decision to become the costumed heroine Phantom Lady. Ted decided to become a "mystery-man" himself, and took the name Starman. He notified the F.B.I. that they could call on him for help.
Soon afterwards, New York F.B.I. chief Woodley Allen asked Starman to go after the criminal Brotherhood of the Electron, which was draining New York City of its electricity. Starman defeated the Brotherhood and its leader, Dr. Doog, and rescued their captive – Prof. Davis himself – who gratefully allowed Starman to keep the gravity rod.
Starman joined both the Justice Society of America and the wartime All-Star Squadron. He retired as a super-hero in 1945 when he got married, and did not return to his Starman career until after his wife’s death twenty years later. Starman greatly improved the gravity rod and renamed it the cosmic rod. He allowed the Star-Spangled Kid to wield it for a time.
Recently, Starman and the rest of the Justice Society went to the dimension of Asgard in order to prevent the destruction of the universe. There Starman and other JSA members merged with many of the Norse gods in order to battle the gods’ greatest enemies. Caught in a "time loop", Starman and most of the JSA will apparently fight these menaces for the rest of eternity, forever repeating their battle and thereby preventing the universe’s destruction.
Powers:
Starman has no super-powers, although he is a fine hand-to-hand combatant. His weapon was originally called a gravity rod, and later, after improvements, a cosmic rod. Responding to Starman’s thoughts, and powered by cosmic energy, the rod lets him defy gravity and fly at great speed. He can use the rod to fire powerful energy bolts, melt objects, repel bullets, and perform various other feats.
