Brotherhood of Evil
Brotherhood of Evil

Name: Brotherhood of Evil
Universe: Earth-1
First Appearance: Doom Patrol #86

History:
A secret organization of super-powered villains dedicated to the total control of the Earth, the Brotherhood of Evil was organized by the mysterious being known only as the Brain.

Together with his super-intelligent ape assistant, Monsieur Mallah, the Brain found a young Parisian actress named Laura DeMille, who, through a damagin car accident, suffered severe schizophrenic behavior. Through use of the Brain's incredible machines, DeMille's positive side was expunged from her mind, leaving only pure undistilled evil. Renamed Madame Rouge, DeMille joined the Brain and Mallah to form the core of the original Brotherhood of Evil. The Brotherhood was headquartered in a Parisian girls' school, Ecole Des Filles, with Madame Rough as its supposed headmistress.

As the Brotherhood gained prominence due to its repeated attacks against the renowned Doom Patrol, the Brain operated on Madame Rouge once again, this time giving her the power to stretch her body and re-form her features so she could disguise herself as anyone she wished.

For a time, the Brotherhood joined forces with other Doom Patrol foes, including General Immortus and Garguax, but Immortus quickly left the Brotherhood and, several months later, Garguax was defeated and returned to his home planet.

In the course of their confrontations, Madame Rouge felt a growing infatuation with Niles Caulder, the leader of the Doom Patrol. These romantic feelings were shared by Caulder, who had learned of Rouge's early life and thus attempted to free her from the Brain's mind-control.

At length, Caulder's efforts succeeded, but Madame Rouge now found herself torn between her love for Niles Caulder and the Brain's powerful lure. This stress was finally more than her fragile mind could endure, and Madame Rouge snapped completely.

Joining forces with former Nazi butcher Colonel Zahl, Rouge seemingly destroyed her erstwhile partners, then held a captured Doom Patrol for worldwide ransom. Rather than allow themselves to be used as pawns, Caulder and his Doom Patrol chose to sacrifice their lives to save the people of a small New England fishing village. Seeing the man she loved perish this way drove Madame Rouge even deeper into irretrievable madness.

Though thought dead, the Brain and Monsieur Mallah had managed to survive Madame Rouge's deadly attack, choosing to remain in hiding for the next several years while they scoured the world for a new Brotherhood of Evil. In the course of their travels, the Brain and Mallah discovered a number of super-powered beings who were more than willing to join their ever-growing group.

From Saint-Tropez, France, came Emil LaSalle, who possessed the power of instant teleportation and called himself Warp.

From London, England, came Angela Hawkins III, a blue-blooded member of the British aristocracy who possessed the power to instill pure, unreasoning fear in the minds of her opponents. The Brain dubbed her Phobia.

In Haiti, the Brain and Mallah encountered Jean-Louis Droo, a computer expert who had mixed modern science with his country's ancient practice of voodoo. With a computerized doll and electronic needle, Droo can affect any part of his opponent's body. Like the old witch doctors before him, Droo took the name Houngan.

From East Berlin, Germany, came Otto Von Furth, a mine worker who had been used by the evil Zahl as a guinea pig for scientific experimentation, his body chemistry altered from flesh to unstable protoplasm, so that with a touch he could bring fiery death to anyone. The Brain renamed the hideously disfigured creature Plasmus.

Together with their new Brotherhood, the Brain and Mallah at last pursued Madame Rouge and Zahl to Africa, where, in the course of a battle that also included the New Teen Titans, Madame Rouge and the self-promoted General Zahl finally paid for their crimes with their lives.

At this writing, all the members of the new Brotherhood of Evil are still at large.
