History:
A brilliant but impoverished young scientist searching for the secret of immortality, Dr. Niles Caulder one day found himself the object of a mysterious benefactor who supplied Caulder with unlimited funds to continue his research, on the condition this unnamed benefactor would be the first person to receive the essense of immortality once Caulder had actually found it. Caulder agreed to those terms, and spent the next several years involved in intense research.

At last discovering the secret of immortality, Caulder became curious as to the identity of the man who had funded him over the years. Caulder's curiosity ultimately led him to an incredible mansion-fortress where he discovered his mysterious benefactor was actually the infamous General Immortus, an international crime boss who claimed to be centuries old. Immortus intended to use Caulder's secret to extend his own life, then blackmail the world.

When Caulder refused to reveal the formula for immortality to the general, Immortus had a miniature bomb implanted in Caulder's chest, kept alive by a low current generated by Caulder's own body. Offering to remove the bomb in exchange for the secret, Immortus set Caulder free.

Realizing the only way to disarm the bomb was to die, Caulder staged a daring one-man raid on Immortus's fortress, forcing the general to shoot him. Mortally wounded, Caulder staggered back to his lab, where he had programmed his robot assistant to operate to remove the bomb the moment Caulder's heart stopped beating.

Acting as programmed, the robot removed the bomb from Caulder's chest, then restored him to life, using Caulder's own immortality secret, but Caulder paid a terrible price for his victory. Caulder discovered the operation had taken several minutes longer than he had figured, and this lost time on the operating table had permanently cost him the use of both legs, leaving him hopelessly crippled.

No longer able to confront Immortus and his ilk physically, Caulder gathered together a group of physical misfits, including ex-test pilot Larry Trainor, ex-actress Rita Farr, and ex-race car driver Cliff Steele to form the Doom Patrol, a team of super-heroes who dedicated their lives to the defeat of General Immortus and anyone else who would threaten to enslave the world.

After saving the world time and again over the next several years, Caulder and his companions were at last slain by the renegade Madame Rouge and the fugitive Nazi General Zahl, when the Doom Patrol voted to sacrifice their own lives to save the people of a small New England fishing village.

Powers:
While possessing no true super-powers of his own, Niles Caulder was one of the most brilliant scientfic minds of the 20th Century, and a natural leader. Though his crippled legs prevented him from engaging in hand-to-hand combat, Caulder occasionally equipped his wheelchair with various weapons, including a flame-thrower.
