History:
In the year 1700, Keith Everet, Earl of Strethmere, was riding through Ireland to purpose to a young woman named Deborah Wallace when he was ambushed and murdered by thieves. The thieves were hanged, and Wallace died of a broken heart. The spirits of his ancestors told Everet’s spirit that they would teach him how to use his spectral powers and would send him back to Earth to avenge evil. However, they said he could not begin his mission until Deborah Wallace returned. Eighty years after his death, Everet’s spirit returned to Earth. Wallace was long dead, and so Everet’s ghost inhabited a painting of himself in Connaught Castle by day and wandered the castle by night.
Finally, in 1941, the castle was visited by Deborah Wallace’s descendant, namesake, and lookalike. (It might be speculated that she was the reincarnation of the original Deborah Wallace.) She was accompanied by Charles Collins, a dissolute American playboy who hoped in vain to marry her. The two travelers encountered Nazi spies, and Collins was killed trying to save Wallace from them. Recognizing Deborah, Everet’s spirit took possession of Collins’ body and rescued her. Everet’s spirit also did battle with one of the spies as the Gay Ghost. Deborah saw the Gay Ghost, but did not realize he was now inhabiting Collins’ body. At the end of this adventure, Everet (as Collins) and Deborah Wallace left for Gotham City.
Shortly thereafter, Everet’s ancestors directed him to help defend England from Nazi aggression. Collins became a pilot first for England’s Royal Air Force and later for the United States military, and, as the Gay Ghost, fought both the Nazis and the Japanese abroad. Collins rose to the rank of lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and, toward the end of the war, fought the Nazis stateside as an F.B.I. agent. Deborah Wallace fell in love with the Gay Ghost.
None of the Gay Ghost’s postwar adventures, if any, have yet been recorded.
Powers:
The Gay Ghost, in addition to being a master swordsman, has various supernatural powers. He took possession of the body of Charles Collins upon Collins’ death and reanimated it. When he goes into action as the Gay Ghost, Everet’s spirit leaves Collins’ body, causing it to collapse. Deborah Wallace thinks that Collins’ collapses are due to recurring fits. The Gay Ghost can take possession of a living human’s body, if that person has "some good in him," by hypnotically forcing that person’s spirit to leave his body temporarily. Apparently the person does not recall being displaced from his body once the possession ends. The Gay Ghost can also enter into and control inanimate objects.
The Gay Ghost can fly and become intangible, enabling him to walk through walls or let bullets pass through him. Conversely, he can become so solid that bullets bounce off him harmlessly. The Gay Ghost is invisible unless he wills himself to be seen, and he can grow to gigantic size, thereby vastly increasing his strength.
