Name: Boy Commandos
Universe: Earth-2
First Appearance: Detective Comics #64
History:
Originally four young orphans who were the mascots of an American Army unit stationed in Great Britain during World War II, the Boy Commandos soon proved themselves the equal of any other fighting unit, undertaking special missions behind enemy lines until the war’s end in 1945.
Under the guardianship and leadership of Captain Rip Carter, the members of the Boy Commandos included the handsome young Frenchman, Andre Chavard; the heavyset young Englishman, Alfy Twidgett; the softspoken young Dutchman, Jan Haasan; and the tough-talking, hard-boiled young American known only as Brooklyn. These five remained together, as much a family unit as a fighting unit, until the surrender of Japan. Just days after the war’s end, Jan Haasan discovered he still had relatives living in Holland, and reluctantly left his companions to help his family run their small farm. The remaining Boy Commandos returned to America with Rip Carter, where they formed their own Commando patrol sworn to take care of trouble anywhere in the world.
Two years later, Alfy Twidgett tearfully bid his teammates farewell as he returned to England to enter college. Alfy’s place in the Commandos was taken by a rope-spinning young cowboy named Tex. When living relatives were located in France a year later, Andre Chavard returned to his homeland, leaving his place in the Commandos to bespectacled young super-genius Percy Clearweather.
Against such foes as Agent Axis and the malevolent Crazy-Quilt, the Boy Commandos left their mark in the annals of adventuredom. Whether they survived into the present, and thus their present whereabouts, is currently unknown.
