History:
Alfred Beagle's father Jarvis had served as butler for Dr. Thomas Wayne for years prior to Wayne's untimely death. Following Wayne's demise, Jarvis returned to England, where upon his deathbed he made his son Alfred promise to return to America and continue the family tradition of serving the Wayne family.
Crossing the Atlantic in the midst of World War II, Alfred became entangled in a plot by Axis agents. Alfred fancied himself an amateur detective. When Batman rescued him from the agents, Alfred offered the Caped Crusader his services. Batman politely declined, leaving Alfred to continue his original mission of becoming Bruce Wayne's butler.
Arriving on Bruce's doorstep, Alfred explained his deathbed promise to his father. Though he did not want a butler, Bruce could not turn Alfred away. That night while Bruce operated as Batman, the Axis agents returned to steal Alfred's valise. Batman rescued Alfred again, then pursued the crooks. One agent remained behind, which Alfred was able to knock out and in the process discover the entrance to the Bat-Cave. Alfred helped Batman finish the case, then revealed his knowledge of his master's double identity. Bruce decided to allow Alfred to stay on as butler, continuing the family tradition.
Alfred soon began helping his master in both identities, operating as an amateur sleuth himself. During his early adventures assisting Batman, he found that his rotund appearance was slowing him down. A diet and exercise regimen helped Alfred slim his figure down to a healthier size.
Alfred continued to serve as Bruce Wayne's assistant and confidant, even after the Batman's semi-retirement. When Bruce donned his costume one final time to help the JSA defeat a super-powered criminal, Bruce was killed. Alfred's fate after his master's death has not been revealed. With the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths, Alfred Beagle's existance along with that of his former master, has been erased from history.
