History:
A wealthy member of Gotham City's exclusive Tobacconists' Club, Dr. Sartorius was coaxed into investing his life savings in a private nuclear power plant being constructed at sea beyond the three-mile limit. Spiraling expenses had forced the builders to cut costs on the project, and when Sartorius went out to inspect his investment one day after working hours, he found that the reactor core had cracked and was about to explode.
Desperate, Sartorius dived behind a pile of sandbags, praying that somehow they would save him, but instead he felt five million slivers of red-hot sand driven through his flesh by the sheer force of the explosion, radioactive sand that had been blasted upward one level on the chemical scale, changing from atomic number fifteen – slicon – to atomic number sixteen – phosphorus. Now a creature of living phosphorus, his mind completely unhinged by the experience, Sartorius – now calling himself Doctor Phosphorus – began a campaign of terror against Gotham City, seeking to destroy those he felt responsible for his plight.
This brought Phosphorus into conflict with the Masked Manhunter called the Batman, who foiled the Doctor's plans to poison the population of Gotham, then watched helplessly as Phosphorus seemingly plunged to his doom in the heart of the reactor's rebuilt core.
Several months later, Phosphorus returned, again attempting to poison the people of Gotham, but once again he was defeated by the Batman, this time with the timely aid of Batgirl. At this writing Dr. Phosphorus is held captive in a specially designed cell at Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane while a cure is sought for his condition.
Powers:
Composed now of a unique form of organic phosphorus as a result of an atomic accident, Dr. Phosphorus burns upon contact with the air, emitting poisonous fumes and glowing with a pure white radioactive flame. A sub-par athlete and hand-to-hand combatant, Dr. Phosphorus is nonetheless a fearsome opponent, since anything that comes into contact with him burns. His sole weakness appears to be deprivation of oxygen, since that prevents his skin from burning.
