This story is continued from New Guardians #11.

Synopsis:
Tom Kalmaku rescues Kilowog who has injured in an attack by the New Guardians. The team has fallen under the control of Janwillem Kroef. They act as his servants, spreading a message of hate and intolerance. Once Kilowog has recovered, Tom challenges Kroef to a battle. The South African leader turns the New Guardians loose against Tom. Using his newly acquired powers of light, Tom defends himself and several mutant men. He is then able to break the control of Kroef with the help of Betty Clawman in spirit form.

Once the team has regained their senses, they are greeted by the spirits of the Guardian and Zamoran who granted them their powers. The mutant creations of Kroef are to become the new Chosen and will become the next step in evolution. Most of the team remains with them to act as guides.
