Synopsis:
The Karama arrives in the harbor of Canton which is filled with Chinese dragon boats. A real dragon emerges from the water below and begins destroying ships. Arak and his companions begin pulling survivors from the water and taking them aboard the Karama, one of the few unmolested ships. When Arak sees a young girl in the water, he dives in after her and succeeds in getting her to safety. However, Arak himself is injured by the dragon and knocked unconscious.

Arak's friends watch as another man swims toward the Quontaukan and carries his body back to the ship. When he climbs aboard several of them recognize him as Haakon the viking they last saw at White Cathay. Haakon has come to Canton posing as a Byzantine ambassador in order to make a profit.

Arak recovers and reaches shore. He learns that the girl he saved is the governors daughter which earns him a reward. Haakon offers to kill the dragon for a price. The Chinese are offended as dragons are revered creatures in their land.

Arak and his friends then meet Khodja Hassan, an arab merchant and brother of the ship's captain. Hassan gives them a place to stay. That night Arak and Valda get a moment alone together. Their quiet time is cut short when Mu-Lan, an armored woman on horseback attacks.
