This story indicates that the Guardians of the Universe sent the Green Lantern to Valstan C5 which proves this story takes place prior to the Guardians' self-imposed exile.

Synopsis:
A Green Lantern who has served the Corps for 3000 years is sent to Valstan C5 to find a successor. He locates a hive mind creature that absorbs life forms into itself. The aging Green Lantern allows himself and his power ring to be absorbed by the creature. The creature then becomes a Green Lantern with each of its many puffball nodes possessing the power of the ring.
