Clark Kent returns to Metropolis early from an arctic expedition. Lois witnesses him caught in an explosion from which no one could have survived. Superman is forced to adopt a new identity as Clarkson. He then tries to find a new job, first as a cub reporter for the Gazetter, then as a waiter, finally as a vacuum salesman. Each job is a failure.

He then visits Lois as Superman. She tells him that the arctic expedition learned of Clark's apparent death. They tell her that he left the same day he was supposedly killed and could not have made it back to Metropolis. Lois thinks the man she saw only resembled Clark. Superman then tells Lois, that he will find the real Kent. Superman is the able to resume his Clark Kent identity.
