Then the energy duplicate bombards Hal with attacks desgined to physically exhaust him. First in an exotic jungle, then is arctic cold, finally in the desert the attacks continue. With GL exhausted, the Guardian sends a yellow globe of destruction to finish off his opponent. Green Lantern flies into space, pursued by the deadly globe. He manages to escape by transporting himself to Earth-2.
When Green Lantern returns to his own universe, he sends his power ring to Hammond, without knowing that Hammond is behind the phony Guardian's creation. Using Hammond as an invulnerable shield the ring is able to battle the Guardian. Hammond is forced to destroy his own creation. Then the power ring returns to GL.
Green Lantern then visits the Guardians, whom he finds still alive and well. He returns to Earth puzzled by the energy duplicate's origin. He does not discover that Hammond was the renegade Guardian's creator.
