After his horse is shot, Jonah Hex is stranded in the desert. He finds a watering hole and nearly drinks from it. However, a passing old-timer named Redeye Charlie warns Jonah that the hole is poisoned. He then gives Jonah fresh water and a ride back to the nearby town of Hall Valley.

The two travelers soon discover that the townspeople have gathered to witness a hanging. The crime of the woman being hanged is minor, but Sam the sheriff refuses to set her free, even after Redeye tries to pay restitution for her. That night Charlie is found drunk and arrested.

The following day, the Yellow Mask Gang robs the town bank. Jonah captures one of the gang and delivers him to the sheriff. Hex then pursues the rest of the gang. The sheriff is helping the gang, but a disagreement with the captured outlaw leads to murder. Charlie witnesses the sheriff shoot the outlaw in the back.

When Hex returns to town with the rest of the gang is custody, he finds Charlie about to be hanged by the sheriff. Hex cuts him loose. Charlie tells the townspeople of the sheriff's involvement with the gang. He isn't believed, until the captive outlaws turn on the sheriff and produce evidence to verify the story. Hex then rides out of town as the townspeople prepare the sheriff for a hanging.
