Synopsis:
Johnny Peril rescues a young man from a gang of armed thugs. When the crooks are apprehended, the man runs away. Johnny tracks him down to learn his story.

The man, Donald Smith, explains that the thug was Aces Jordan, to whom he owed some gambling debts. Donald also explains that he nearly committed suicide, but he was talked out of it by a talking dog.

Donald continues with the incredulous story about the talking dog named Bernie. The dog feared being made to perform for people. When Donald secretly tried to put Bernie in a stage production in order to even his gambling debt, Bernie ran away. While looking for Bernie, Donald was accosted by the thugs, then rescued by Johnny.

Johnny leaves Donald to continue his search. Johnny wonders whether Donald fabricated the story of the talking dog, until he meets a talking dog of his own. However, this dog's speech was actually faked by a ventriloquist.
