This story relates the origin of Green Lantern, Alan Scott. Alan only appears in costume in the last panel of this story.
The history of Green Lantern’s magic lamp is related to him by the Flame of Life which is present in the lamp itself.

Synopsis:
A young engineer, Alan Scott, is involved in a fatal train wreck. His life is spared by the Flame of Life, a green energy residing in a magic lamp. The lamp tells Alan it will bring him power over evil. Alan uses the power to catch the men who sabotaged the train. Then he fashions a costume for himself, adopting the identity of Green Lantern.
