History:
Ages ago the Guardians of the Universe decided that in order to preserve the rule of order in their cosmos, they must remove most mystical energies from it. They gathered together most of the magical force in the universe and contained it within a mystic orb called the Starheart, which they concealed within a star. Upon the creation of the Starheart, a consciousness was born within it that is known as the Green Flame of Life. The Flame willed a small portion of its being to travel into a parallel universe, in order that its power might one day be wielded by a hero there.

The portion of the Starheart fell to Earth-2 centuries ago in the form of a glowing green meteor. A voice issued from it, saying, "Three times shall I flame green! First – to bring death! Second – to bring life! Third – to bring power!" Chang, a chinese man who found the "meteor," made a lamp from it. But other people, fearing that Chang would anger the gods by using the strange lamp, attacked him. The lamp flamed green, killing Chang’s assailants.

Over the succeeding years the lamp passed through many hands, bringing good fortune to the good and destruction to evildoers. It then came into the possession of a patient at Arkham Asylum who remade the lamp into a train lantern. The lantern flamed green, restoring the patient’s sanity.

Finally, engineer Alan Scott found himself holding the lantern as he rode a train over a bridge the construction of which he had supervised. The government had chosen Scott’s company to build the bridge over a company headed by a man named Dekker. The vengeful Dekker had the bridge blown up, wrecking the train as it passed over it. Scott, holding the lantern, survived. A voice came from the lantern instructing Scott to make a ring with which he could tap its power and to use that power to fight evil. Scott used his new powers to force Dekker, who died immediately afterward, to sign a confession. Scott decided to adopt the costumed identity of the Green Lantern.

As Green Lantern, Scott was a founding member and the second chairman of the Justice Society of America, as well as a member of the wartime All-Star Squadron.

Scott retired as Green Lantern as a result of the demand that he unmask during a congressional investigation of the Justice Society. During the following years Scott became president and chief owner of the Gotham Broadcasting Company. He returned to his career as Green Lantern when the Justice Society was reactivated.

In recent years Scoot went bankrupt and lost control of Gotham Broadcasting. However, his friend Jay Garrick gave him a new job as an engineer at Keystone Laboratories. Two new super-heroes, Jade and Obsidian, have recently appeared, claiming to be Green Lantern’s children, but it remains to be seen whether or not their claim is true.

Powers:
The Green Lantern wields a power ring that is charged with mystical green energy he can command through his will power. Originally, the ring enabled him only to fly, to pass through objects, and gave him control over and invulnerability to metals. But the ring’s power rapidly grew, and the Green Lantern can now use it to perform virtually any feat.

The ring has only three limitations: its power is limited by the strength of its wielder’s will power, it is incapable of affecting anything made of wood, and the ring will run out of energy at the end of 24 hours unless it is recharged at the mystical lantern (from which the ring was made).

The Green Lantern is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. Thanks to his absorbing temporal energy from the evil Ian Karkull, the Green Lantern possesses far more physical vitality than other men of his age.
